Laptop users are increased worldwide and the world is now turned @ 3G/4G wireless networks. All these improvements are linked to the internet with the help of wireless media. 

We use routers for these type of connectivity. It's very important for us to know how many users are connected to our network and the traffic in our network. There are many chances that our passwords may be shared with others or some hackers can easily break our network connectivity to get into our network.

I always recommend my friends to grand access to the network by MAC-ID only. This way we can secure our network for some extend. To know the active users in our network we can have our routers software but these softwares doesn't work 100% to give the right details in that case we may need this to find who are the users connected into it.

Firefox Fake Update

Dear Readers,

Please be aware of this fake update on your Mozilla browser. Recently this is happening in many users PC, the moment you open the firefox browser you will be notified like your browser is outdated and required update for latest version. It also informs us to update Adobe Flash Player right away. 

90% of the users will never notice the address bar and will just click to update link to enjoy the recent changes. By clicking on the link the download starts and the file will be saved on the local drive. By Running it you will get a antivirus product named as "SecurityTool” which starts finding threats which aren’t there and demanding payment in order to  remove them.

Home Network settings

Every internet users have network settings connected to our PC where the packets are transfered. Most of the laptop users connect to internet via wifi which is known as Wireless local area network based on IEEE 802.11 standard.

If time permit let me explain you the wifi concept in detail. Coming back to our title as all laptop/notebook users connect to internet via wifi which has routers for signal transmission. A router is a networking device whose software and hardware are customized to the tasks of routing and forwarding the information from modem to our laptop/notebook.

These routers are very important for data transmission. Depending on the cost of routers the signal strength and security measures vary.

Router has it's own MAC ID and it's ip address which is called as gateway. Router software will vary as per the manufactures. This software has the option to setup network name , password and other personal settings. 80% of the home users will be connecting to their network with network name & password alone. What happens is when we connect with this type of connectivity it's easy to crack the network and password. I have wondered myself when i saw 10 users connected to my network without my knowledge.

The slowness in connectivity, traffic in our network will irritate us very often. This is because we may not know whether our network is secured and we are the only users to this network. Many of us call to the internet provider and shout to them stating the network is very slow. Before we complain to the internet provider we should make sure whether our network settings are good and secured.

I use to check the following measures before i call them up.

1. Connect the laptop to modem and check the speed of the internet.
2. If the download and upload speed is good then we are okay else call the provider right away. Repeat the same by connecting with router.
3. If the speed difference is huge then the issue is with router. Login to router settings and check who are the users connected to the network.
4. If you are the only user or the known users are connected then probably the signal is very less with router. Buy a new router with good signal strength.
5. In case more users are connected to the router then your router may not be protected with password/ router password is distributed/ your router is hacked :(. You have no other choice to change password immediately. This is very serious.

In such cases i strongly recommend you all to connect the routers with MAC ID along with password protected.  Change the settings as below

• Make your network invisible
• Have router password as more complex one with more than 8 char length. 
• Connect the users with MAC ID which is unique to all system. Now even the password is distributed the users cannot connect if this network as that MAC ID is permitted to this network. 

This way we can secure our home network.

ICICI Phishing Alert

Today is really a challenging day for me at the same time a big lesson learnt by me. I am holding ICICI account for more than 5 yrs. I am very much satisfied with ICICI banking system. 

One fine day on June 29th 2010 i was busy in starting to my office where my calendar alerts me with few action items for the day. I was completing those task and in parallel i was checking my emails. I received the below email from Customer.care@icicibank.com which is the exact customer care ID of ICICI bank.

I thought they need some survey details and by seeing from address (in hurry) i just clicked on the link in the email which directed me to an another webpage which looks like ICICI bank webpage. It asked my Internet ID,Password,Card#,Grid#, Mobile# etc. I just entered all these details. When entering Grid# something stroked in my mind and i didn't bother. I also checked the URL(looked like an ftp site) on which i didn't felt it's a fake URL. I just submitted the information requested and left office.

After couple of days i received an sms to my mobile stating new payee added and that sms has an URN (Unique Registration Number). As i am out of town my sister saw the message and within 1 hr of that sms arrival, she receives a call to my mobile stating "We are from ICICI head office Mumbai and we have sent one URN please let us know the URN if you didn't say your online ID will be deactivated". As they said head office/deactivation of bank ID she also didn't try to think what is about she just gave the URN :(. When i called her casually she informed me on this and i called bank then deleted the registered payee, changed my online passwords and applied for new card by deactivating the existing card :(. 

When i click on the same link which they have sent me on June 29th 2010 i was redirected to some European website :(.  As everything happened in 1/2 hour i didn't loose any money. Thank God!

I just posted this to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone. I also visited all my email id's and changed my passwords for safety. Though i address on many security issues @ my work place and advise people on security, due to my hurry i have missed myself on some basic checks. We cannot raise a wall for ourself to everything. People are always running behind us to break the wall. 

I would like to thank ICICI bank for having many security measures in money transfers like sending URN,Grid#, PIN verifications etc which made some loop hold and strike us. But still it's our responsibility to keep our credentials safely.

The event which happened for me is known as PHISHING. It's nothing but an act of sending email that falsely claims to be from a legitimate organization. This is usually combined with a threat or request for information: for example, that an account will close, a balance is due, or information is missing from an account. 

How to avoid such things?

1. Never enter/share your credentials with anyone/anywhere except by directly entering into bank URL's.
2. Keep an track of your account activity on everyday basis as it wont take more than 2-4 mins daily.
3. If your mobile is handled by any of your family members please ask them not to disclose any of your personal details/your current locations/any sms that sent to your mobile.
4. Try to use KeyScrambler kind of add-ons to protect your key strokes
5. Change the passwords every 45 days without fail. 
6. Keep a track of your payee lists every one week at least.
